Our history
We were founded in 2010, following the Third International Conference on the Humanization of Labor and Birth in Brasilia, where our founder, Jackie Pérez Sanjurjo (Puerto Rico), brought together a group of women from several countries to create the Latin American and Caribbean Doula Network. This dream had a single goal: to unite and empower doulas across the Americas.
In 2013, Isabella Polito was appointed deputy general coordinator and, with her tireless dedication, continued the work despite the challenges.
In 2014, with the addition of Spain and other countries, we evolved into what we are today: the World Doula Network, a global community committed to humanizing childbirth.
Today, with representation in more than 15 countries, we continue to advance toward a future where every doula is empowered, every family feels supported, and our profession is internationally recognized.
Together we weave networks, build bridges and accompany hearts.
How do we do it?
Through a strong and collaborative network, we work to:
To integrate and represent doulas from the Americas, Europe, and other regions, strengthening their impact on the communities they serve.
Propose and promote a common code of ethics, unifying criteria and practices that reflect our dedication, sensitivity, and professionalism.
Educate and raise awareness about the importance of emotional and physical support during childbirth, promoting respect for cultural diversity and individual needs.
What do we do?
RMD is dedicated to:
To offer a space for doulas from more than 15 countries to connect, building bridges between cultures and experiences.
Organize training activities, conferences, and certifications that promote the professional growth of our members.
Promote strategic alliances with other organizations, ensuring international recognition of our profession.
Facilitate access to resources and tools to strengthen each doula's work and empower them on their journey.
Why do we exist?
At the Global Doula Network (GDN), we believe in the importance of lovingly and respectfully accompanying families during the most momentous moments of their lives. Our purpose is to build a global community that promotes the humanization of labor and birth, promoting the recognition and professionalization of doula work worldwide.
Code of Ethics
The RMD Code of Ethics is a fundamental guide that unifies the principles and practices of doulas, promoting respectful, professional, and humane support. It is designed to guide our actions, establishing clear boundaries and fostering the empowerment of families throughout the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum process.
Our Principles:
Recognize and respect the limits of our work.
Eradicate obstetric violence and promote humane spaces.
Work in harmony with multi-professional teams.
Provide care based on scientific and up-to-date evidence.
Maintain ethical and personal consistency.
Ethical Commitments:
Confidentiality and respect for privacy.
Inclusion and non-discrimination.
Empowering families.
Continuing education for doulas.
Comprehensive care of ourselves.
This Code of Ethics is the cornerstone that allows us to transform the culture of childbirth and birth care, promoting a coexistence based on respect, dignity, and professionalism. Together, we weave networks to change the world with love.
